Meta Brings MongoDB CEO CJ Desai Into New Enterprise AI Push

Meta is expanding its artificial intelligence business beyond its consumer platforms, with the company launching a new enterprise-focused initiative and bringing MongoDB CEO Chirantan “CJ” Desai on board to lead it.

The move was announced on September 28, as Meta introduced its Meta Enterprise Platform. Desai will become Meta’s Chief Enterprise Platform Officer and report directly to CEO Mark Zuckerberg. His new role will focus on turning Meta’s AI technology into products that companies and developers can use in their own operations.

The appointment also creates an immediate leadership change at MongoDB. Desai has stepped down as the database company’s president and CEO, with former chief executive Dev Ittycheria returning as interim CEO while the board searches for a permanent replacement.

Meta Moves Deeper Into Enterprise AI

Meta is already one of the world’s largest technology companies, but much of its business has traditionally been connected to consumer services and digital advertising.

The new enterprise platform gives the company another way to use the AI systems it has been developing. Meta says the initiative will bring together its AI models, agents, infrastructure and developer tools for businesses.

The initial offering includes products such as Muse, Meta Business Agent, Muse API and Muse Code. Meta says these tools are intended to help businesses use AI across areas such as customer interactions, development and business operations.

Rather than treating each AI product as a separate service, Meta is bringing them under a broader enterprise platform. The company says the goal is to allow businesses to deploy its technology for their own needs.

Why Desai Is Taking the New Role

Desai comes to Meta with extensive experience in enterprise software.

He became MongoDB’s president and CEO in November 2025 after previously working in senior technology positions at companies including Cloudflare and ServiceNow. Meta says he led product and engineering at Cloudflare and spent nearly eight years at ServiceNow, where he eventually served as president and chief operating officer.

His background is closely connected to the type of business Meta is now targeting. Enterprise customers generally require software that can fit into existing systems, handle large amounts of data and meet security and operational requirements.

At Meta, Desai will oversee the development of the company's enterprise platform and report directly to Zuckerberg.

What Meta Is Bringing to Businesses

The new platform is built around several AI products rather than a single application.

One of them is Muse, an AI agent that Meta introduced earlier this month. Reuters reports that Muse has been designed to handle tasks such as shopping, travel bookings, emails and payments.

Meta Business Agent is aimed at businesses, while Muse API and Muse Code are designed to give developers additional ways to work with Meta’s AI technology.

The company has not publicly provided a complete commercial breakdown of the new platform, including detailed pricing for every service. That means the way enterprise customers will eventually buy and deploy these tools is still taking shape.

MongoDB Enters a Leadership Transition

While Meta is starting its new enterprise initiative, MongoDB is dealing with the sudden departure of its chief executive.

MongoDB announced that Desai left his position effective immediately on September 28. The company's board appointed Dev Ittycheria as interim president and CEO and began the process of finding a permanent successor. An executive search firm has also been retained.

Ittycheria previously led MongoDB from 2014 until 2025 and remained on the company's board. MongoDB said it has reaffirmed its financial guidance for the third quarter and full fiscal year 2027.

The leadership change came shortly before MongoDB's scheduled Investor Day on September 29, where the company is expected to discuss its longer-term strategy, market opportunities and product development.

A Bigger AI Business for Meta

Meta's enterprise push shows how quickly AI is becoming a major part of the company's broader business strategy.

The company already has relationships with hundreds of millions of businesses through its existing platforms. Meta says its new enterprise effort will build on that experience while giving companies direct access to its AI models, agents and development tools.

For businesses, potential applications could include customer support, software development, automated workflows and other tasks that can be handled with AI. However, the actual commercial impact will depend on how companies adopt the technology and how Meta develops the platform over time.

What Happens Next

Meta's enterprise platform is still at an early stage. The company has announced the core products and appointed Desai to lead the effort, but details about the wider rollout and commercial structure are still developing.

For MongoDB, the immediate priority is finding a permanent CEO while keeping the company’s existing business plans on track.

The move puts two major technology developments side by side: Meta is creating a new route into enterprise AI, while MongoDB is beginning a leadership transition after its CEO moved to the new role.

How Meta's enterprise platform develops over the coming months will show how far the company can extend its AI technology beyond its existing consumer and advertising businesses.
